This is the same shiitake mushroom "kit" that you can find elsewhere for $20 to $35. Our block is not a "kit" because you do not really need a fancy "tent" or "special instructions".You will receive the block in a filter bag - open the bag and watch the mushrooms grow. If you want to experiment - you will get more. But you will get some even if you've never tried it before. There are two major ways to initiate fruiting of the block (unless you count the Japanese method of beating the log with a stick :)- with temperature and with dry-wet cycle. Temperature is easy (that's what we do before we ship the block to you for the first break) but it requires 60-62F, which is really hard to find at home. That's why we recommend the dry-wet cycle method for second wave. Please note that in the summer time the block could be exposed to higher temperature during shipping and will produce fewer mushroom or none. Be patient - the block will recover and produce more during the second break. Remember, this is a live organism and nobody can guarantee you 100% instant success.Thank you and good luck!See instructions below: Normal 0 This is the process that will allow your mushroom block to produce several cycles (called ‘waves’) of fresh mushrooms in its lifetime. OPEN THE BAG and take the block out. Discard or recycle the original bag. PUT THE BLOCK UNDER THE TENT BAG. Fold the edges of the large bag and cover the block from the top like a hat. The block needs to breath. PLACE IN HEATED AREA. The ideal temperature is 68 degrees Fahrenheit, but the mushrooms will grow in any temperature between 60 and 75 degrees. Keep in mind that the colder the temperature, the slower the growth, but the higher the quality of mushrooms. WAIT. Depending on the temperature, humidity, and the maturity of the block you received, the mushrooms will be ready to harvest in 10 to 14 days. The mushrooms are fully ripe when edges of the cap are very thin. HARVEST THE MUSHROOMS. Cut all of the mushrooms on the block at one time, or as needed over a 2 or 3 day period. No new mushrooms will appear at this time and the small mushrooms will not get larger. DRY BLOCK. Clean block by cutting the mushroom stems flush with the block. Be careful not to crack or harm the outside crust of the block. Let the block dry at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks. SOAK BLOCK. Place block in the tent bag. Fill the bag with cold water until it covers the block entirely. Tie the bag closed....Put a weight on top if necessary. Soak the block for 8 hours or over night. This process is best done in a sink or in a bucket. EMPTY OUT THE WATER and place the block back under the tent bag. This takes you back to the first part of the cycle: place the block in a heated area and wait another 10 to 14 days. THE SECOND HARVEST is often of better quality than the first. REPEAT CYCLE until the yield diminished due to block exhaustion. Also some extra information:This is strain CS-321 from NW Mycological Consultants (Oregon)Fruiting management: Initiation: this strain needs cool to warm temperatures (60-65F) to initiate pinning and during pinning. It will pin best between 57F and 60F. The temperature is often held at 60 -63 F constantly for this strain Fruiting rooms should be maintained on the dry side for the first break to control over-pinning. Pick days: 8-13 day after opening. Rest 7 days after pick before soaking. Do not over soak this strain. Yields will be .75 to 1 lb on the first break, .25-0.5 lb on the second through the 5th break. Later break mushrooms are typically larger than first break mushrooms as fewer mushrooms are produced. This strain is resistant to contamination during fruiting.
