You should maintain a GPH flow of at least 4 times the size of your tank for fresh water aquariums and 5 times tank size for salt water aquariums. Remember that if raising the water from a well or sump or if you are pulling through a filter you will need to purchase a submersible pump with GPH to overcome this decrease in flow.
