Description: One of the most spectacular palms from the Seychelles, Splendid Palm has the big three that palm collectors look for; entire leaves in young plants, a spiny trunk, and to top it all off, well developed stilt roots. It is a medium sized palm, with leaves to about 8 feet long, and up to about 60 feet tall. General: Verschaffeltia is a monotypic genus, which means that this species is the only member. Culture: Tropical in its requirements, however Seychelles Stilt Palm will grow in a sheltered position in the sub-tropics. Likes a position sheltered from the wind, (to keep the leaves intact), full sun or shade, and moist, but well drained. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings. Grown in full sun, even temperatures in the low 40's having little effect on the leaves. Keep in a spot protected from the wind. Seychelles Stilt Palm is highly prized for it's unusual growth habits and loses it's spines with age. It can have "stilt-like" roots up to 3 feet above the ground. Leaf: Pinnate,Wind will shred it's undivided leaves. Trunk: Green crownshaft, Dark brown, ringed, stilt roots, spines on juvenile trees. Flower: Flower stalk coming from among the leaves.
