7_heads store Pritchardia affinis seed   Pritchardia affinis "Loulu" Kona Fan Palm   Native to Hawaii, The Big Island of Hawaii   Loulu lelo Palm             Pritchardia affinis               From high altitude in Hawaii, this is certainly one of the easiest and fastest of the Pritchardia to grow, and should not be confused with its tropical cousins which are anything but. Its first leaves are broad, bright green and longitudinally ridged. When the plant is older they are fan-shaped, and it is everything you would expect from a Hawaiian palm. It grows in medium to bright light, has no unusual requirements other than a rich soil and plenty of water, and grows rather fast. It is astonishingly beautiful, and essential in the conservatory of any palm enthusiast. A fine looking, long-lived palm at 10-25 m (33-82 ft) tall, Pritchardia affinis is often used as a landscape specimen on the west side of Hawai'i Island. It is one of 19 native species of the fan palm genus Pritchardia, distinguished by undulating, pale green and often yellowing blades and almost round black fruits 2-3 cm in diameter.              Pritchardia are single trunked palm trees with fan-shaped leaves. The Hawaiian Pritchardia are generally medium to large sized palms growing from 25 to 60 feet tall. The color and hairiness of the leaves, the length of the flowering stems, and the size and color of the fruit vary by species. For example, Pritchardia hillebrandii is from Moloka'i and grows to about 20 feet tall. It has leaves that are silvery underneath, flower stalks that don't extend beyond the leaves, and round fruit that is up to 1 inch in diameter and blue to black when ripe.          The genus Pritchardia consists of 25 species of palms native to the tropical Pacific Islands. There are as many as 19 endemic species of Pritchardia in the Hawaiian islands including species categorized as either endangered, rare or vulnerable. Each Hawaiian island has at least one distinct Pritchardia species with some islands having distinct species or forms restricted to individual valleys or mountains. A total of 19 loulu have been tentatively identified as endemic to the Hawaiian Islands.     Common Names: English Name: Hawaiian Fan Palm, Kona Fan Palm Hawaiian Name: Loulu Synonymy: Pritchardia affinis var. gracilis Pritchardia affinis var. halophila Pritchardia affinis var. rhopalocarpa Conservation Status: Pritchardia affinis is registered as an endangered species. Many of the remaining individuals of the extremely rare species are located in areas that are highly valued for development. Loulu is endemic to South Kona and is now only found on the island of Hawaii where native people likely planted them. This species is known to have come to the island at least 40,000 years ago probably by the rafting of entire individuals across the ocean. It is thought that these palms grew in extensive groves surrounding many of Hawai'i's islands before the Polynesians brought the pig and the Polynesian rat. Seven populations containing 50-65 individuals total are known in the wild. These plants are located on both private and state owned. However, since this species is easily cultivated, and may even have been cultivated in traditional Hawai'i, it is difficult to distinguish remnants of truly wild populations from cultivated plants.   Distribution & Habitat: The species' natural habitat is unknown. It likely was cultivated by Hawaiians prior to western contact, and it is still planted today. This species is currently found on the leeward side of the Island of Hawaii in inhabited or abandoned Hawaiian coastal settlements and occasionally inland mesic gulches at 0-600 m (0-2000 ft) in elevation. Description:A fine looking, long-lived palm at 33-82 feet tall, with a crown of large leaves. Pritchardia affinis is often used as a landscape specimen on the west side of Hawai'i Island. It is one of 19 native species of the fan palm genus Pritchardia, distinguished by undulating, pale green and often yellowing blades and almost round black fruits 2-3 cm in diameter. The leaves are rigid with stiff points, smooth above but waxy glaucous below and devoid of scales. The petioles and lower costae are densely covered in ash-grey felt. The inflorescence is shorter than the petioles. The fruits are virtually globose, measuring around 20 mm with seeds 11-13 mm in diameter. Indigenous Practices: The leaf blades were used for thatching in old Hawai'i, the wood for spears, and the seeds were eaten. In the 19th century, people began making hats from the blades, and old trees are often marked with foot holds cut into the trunks to make harvesting the leaves easier. In old Hawai'i,the seeds of this species were eaten. Culture: Widely cultivated and fast growing, fresh seed germinates within 4 weeks and grows quickly.
